How To Overcome Depression

Yes. That's right you CAN overcome depression, it's not easy but it is possible. First things first are you really depressed or are you just burnt out? The symptoms overlap loads...you can read my post on the subject here and what to do about it.

So how do I overcome depression?

You've got to break the cycle or it'll be never ending man, start small by being grateful for 3-5 things they can be little things like that you have toilet roll or that you don't have to shit in a bucket, you should try practice being grateful daily if you can. Then you've gotta make a promise to yourself that you'll attempt getting dressed/washed/make yourself look more presentable each day because it'll make you feel a little better. It might not feel nice at first to have to get dressed but once you've successfully managed this for a week or so then you can begin to tackle the stuff you've been putting off. It's easier if you write a list of what's most important and tick the things off once you've done it, try one task per day at first as to not to overwhelm yourself with too much change, (incremental baby steps is what's needed to overcome depression) only add more once you feel comfortable. This will build your confidence and in turn lessen your depression. Before you know it you're suddenly able to do 3 tasks in a day and don't worry if some days all you can do is half a task little steps is better nothing and remember healing isn't linear.

Find music that makes you feel really good vs sad soppy shit that you can relate to which is just a constant reminder each time you listen to it, giving more fuel to the fire. sad slow music helps in the short term but in the long term it's not worth it. So if you know you're in a depressive episode then maybe try switch up your music to something that's more uplifting. Or even listen to 10 minute affirmations on YouTube, this will help get you to think outside of the box in more positive ways and you'll start to adopt some of them as your own outlook on reality if you listen to it daily; within the first hour of waking up i suggest as this is when your mindset forms for the day.

You should also (art) journal, write your thoughts down and/or paint your emotions for a clearer mind and eventual healing. You've gotta release the bullshit in a healthy way and journalling is one of the best ways to do so, you can even set fire to the paper after you've wrote on it *obviously do this outside* but yeah, journalling is key to managing your mental health correctly; you can keep track of your thoughts/emotions and figure out what the problem is which is way easier than tryna figure it all out in your head. Personally I find art journalling easier than writing as I don't always have the words infact very rarely do I have the words to express what's going on but I do do a mixture of artwork with lyrics and occasional journalling to manage my own mental health.

You could also try medication, it's not for everyone and I can't speak from experience of what medication is like for depression as i didn't want to go down that route, mine is for psychosis. BUT what I can tell you is medication really does work, i'm not saying medication will make you happy but the thoughts won't be there to make you depressed so that's half the battle.

What are you doing to overcome your depression?

Till next time,

Stevie x
