Figuring Out What You Want From Life

Figuring out what you want from life can be really challenging for almost anyone and when you have mental health problems, it can completely put the brakes on having any sort of idea what you could want from life for various reasons, such as beliefs, experiences like losing passion for things you once enjoyed and symptoms like brain fog. So what do you do if you don't know what you want from life?

Really knowing what you want from life can be broken down into four steps to make it easier.

Step 1) Don't put pressure on yourself to have it all figured out - take a moment to ask yourself about the current situation you're in. Be real with yourself if things are going shit, what would you like to change that is in your power. It's okay to not know what's in your power to change, write down what you'd like to change in your life and then try think of the most logical solution for changing whatever it is...if you can't come up with a solution then it may not be in your power to change it - that doesn't mean you're stuck necessarily it means you'll have to wait for better days to come (life's like a heartbeat it goes up and down). In this scenario my best advice is to vent to the universe, ask for guidance and help with your current situation, don't forget to finish off the prayer with amen and thank you kindly.

Step 2) What are your current strengths and weaknesses...what's achievable for you to work on realistically? - To make this easier you could do a Myers Briggs Personality test for free which will explain your current strengths and weaknesses within your personality type. You can also think about areas within life that you could work on is it knowledge? finances/career? human connection?

Thinking about what you can work on within yourself and other areas in life are the first steps towards change.

Step 3) Follow your curiosities - One of the best ways to figure out the next chapter in your life is to explore your interests even if you have no idea where to start, just try to research whatever it is you're interested in. and If you don't know what interests you, it's time to experiment with trying different things, join a group, learn something new or buy something to do that you've never done before. Along the way of exploring the interests one might spark your next chapter or at least give somewhat of an idea as to what you might want.

Step 4) Create stillness to truly listen - constantly filling your time all day everyday will distract you from understanding what is it that you'd actually like from life; being still for even 5 mins to just witness your thoughts and emotions will help you figure out some things. To make it even easier do a mind dump where you should list everything on your mind (the worries, joys, silly and stuff that might not make sense at first). Doing this will help make sense and visualise what it is that's going on so you can begin to work out what you'd like to change.

Figuring out what you want from life is important so you're not just going through the motions. It's okay if what you thought you wanted from life no longer applies after exploring it further. It's okay to change your mind as many times as you feel and it's okay to feel lost in the process of figuring out what you want from life; know that this is normal and eventually you will figure out some things even if it's just what you don't want in life, it's a start.

Till next time,
